How to Find the Service Manual for a Dell Laptop

Before doing any repairs or upgrades on your Dell laptop you should review the procedure in the service manual. Dell service manuals contain step by step instructions for taking apart the computer and putting it back together without damaging it.

Unlike desktops the internal construction of laptops varies greatly between manufacturers and models. Even experienced technicians consult service manuals, especially when a new model is released. If you're considering a do-it-yourself repair I would highly advise looking over the procedure in the service manual before you decide if you want to attempt the repair yourself.

There are several web sites that sell service manuals for Dell laptops but the truth is you can easily obtain them for free.

In order to obtain the correct service manual for your Dell laptop you will need to find the computers service tag. The service tag is located on a label on the bottom of the computer.

You can also use the express service code. Although you will need to use a conversion tool to convert the express service code in to a service tag.

If you don't have access to either of them you can search using the model number of the computer instead.

Once you know either the service tag or model number for the computer visit the dell support website at http://support.dell.com.

On the left hand side click on the manuals link which is found under the product support heading.

Then click enter a tag and type in the service tag for the computer. After you click enter a page with all of the documentation for the computer will be loaded.

The service manual can be viewed online or downloaded to your computer.

Dell service manuals are divided in to sections based on the component you need to replace.

Each section contains links to the tasks that must be performed in order to replace or upgrade the specific part you need to work on.

The pictures and diagrams in the manuals take the guess work out of the repair job.

Not all notebook manufacturers make their service manuals as easy to obtain as Dell does. Some companies even charge for their service manuals!
